How To Avoid Looking Like A Hot Mess During The Summer

Posted on July 26, 2018 by

Ah, summer – the days get longer, the nights get wilder, and there’s an overall sense of freedom lingering in the air. What’s not to love about it all?

Oh, yeah, heat and sweating.

How can you avoid looking like a hot mess, when you feel like one? Keep on reading to find out all about how to stay cool during the summer!

Don’t Sweat It: Style Hacks To Stay Cool This Summer

Staying cool (and looking the part, too) during summer has to be one of the trickiest things in the entire world. How are you supposed to look stylish, when you’re gleaming with sweat?

I have some tips on how to stay cool during the summer and look stylish doing it that might help!

1. Natural Fabrics Are Your Best Friend

I can’t stress this enough.

There’s a reason why you should stay away from fabrics like rayon and polyester, and everything else that screams synthetic – breathability, or the lack of it, to be exact.

Cotton, linen, and other natural fabrics are the way to go when temperatures begin to skyrocket during summer because they’ll let your body breath.

2. Loose, Not Flimsy

The looser, the better – that’s the golden rule for summer attire. However, make sure you don’t mix up loose with flimsy.

While lightweight materials are an excellent choice for hot weather, they do tend to stick to your body as soon as you start sweating, and that’s a look no one can pull off, no matter what. Make sure they have some structure – like seams and embroidery – that will keep them from clinging.

3. No Large Tots Or Backpacks Allowed

I know you have a favorite tote in your closet that you can’t seem to put down – it pairs so well with all your outfits!

But for the sake of staying cool when the temperature rises, you might want to reconsider bringing your large tote with you. All it does is sit close to your body, and make you sweat.

The same goes for backpacks. Yes, they’re practical, but they also trap the heat. You don’t want to see what the back of your shirt looks like once you take the backpack off – trust me on this.

During the summer, a handbag or a crossbody is the way to go!

4. Stick To White

Think of all-white outfits as the summer equivalent of all-black outfits you can rock for the rest of the year. You’ll look effortlessly chic, but that’s not the only advantage here – you’ll feel much colder, too.

I’m sure you already know this, but it doesn’t hurt to repeat it:

Dark colors absorb the sunlight which will make you feel hot even in the lightest of fabrics. Light colors – white, pastels, and creams – on the other hand, will reflect sunlight and help you keep your cool.

5. Ditch The Jewelry

Well, to be fair, earrings are okay. Everything else – not so much!

I know it might be tempting to accessorize with large, statement jewelry pieces when all you’re wearing is a simple, oversized tunic, but try and resist the urge to do so. Metals get hot, large cuffs cover your wrists (a major cooling point), and heavy necklaces make your clothes stick to your chest. It doesn’t sound very summery, does it?

Final Thoughts

Your body will notice once the temperatures reach three-digit numbers – it doesn’t need a thermometer to tell it’s way too hot. And I know it seems nearly impossible, but with a little help from a few of these tips on how to stay cool during the summer, I’m sure you’ll get through it without even breaking a sweat!

Building A Timeless Wardrobe – 8 Essential Pieces Everyone Should Own

Posted on July 25, 2018 by

Trends come and go, that’s just how fashion works. However, some pieces can last a lifetime without ever going out of style – there’s a reason why they’re called wardrobe staples, after all.

If you’re having some trouble with building a “timeless” wardrobe, check out this list of essential pieces everyone should own!

8 Essential Pieces Every Woman Should Have In Her Closet

If you don’t have much experience when it comes to wardrobe essentials, any of the following pieces is an excellent place to start:

1. Little Black Dress

I figured what better way to start this list than with the mandatory LBD – little black dress.

Do I even have to explain this one to you?

To get the most out of your LBD, opt for one with a semi-modest length – with little accessory changes, you can go from day to night in the same dress!

2. White Button-Down Shirt

Let’s get something out of the way:

You can never go wrong when you go with a white button-down shirt.

Depending on where you’re going, you can combine it with a pencil skirt (another must-have piece for the ladies) or with jeans, and I promise you’ll strike the perfect balance between casual and polished.

3. The Perfectly Fitted Blazer

You don’t have to work in an office to wear a blazer. Every woman should have one of these in her closet. Nothing compliments your silhouette like a fitted blazer!

Here’s an extra tip:

If it doesn’t fit right, it’s time you take it to your trusted tailor.

4. Plain White Tee

You’ve probably had one of these in your closet for years, without even realizing its full potential.

What makes a white tee a wardrobe staple, though?

Well, it takes the guesswork out of getting dressed in the morning, and you can wear it pretty much any day of the year. Just pair it with your favorite jeans, and you’re good to go!

5. Trench Coat

Another piece you should have in your closet by the end of this year is a trench coat.

It’s structured, yet comfortable, and if you buy it in one of the neutral colors, like khaki or navy blue, you’ll add a touch of class to all your outfits. Plus, they’re perfect for the tricky spring weather, when it’s not exactly cold, but it’s not warm, either.

6. Strappy Sandals

You’ve seen it on every celebrity that ever walked the red carpet, so I think it’s time you get a pair, too. Opt for metallic, like silver or gold, because they make a statement, but they’re still subtle enough to work with any color and any pattern under the sun.

7. Simple, Neutral Flats

High heels are fabulous and all, but when your feet are screaming for a break from stilettos, neutral flats are the way to go. The best thing about them is that they’re suitable for everything from a board meeting, to running chores around the town.

That said, make sure you have a pair of comfortable shoes laying around, too.

8. Black Pumps

The modern-day Cinderella wouldn’t opt for a glass slipper. She’d go with a pair of black leather pumps.

There’s not a pair of shoes as versatile as the black pumps – dresses, skirts, jeans, trousers, day or night occasions, casual or formal events – they’ll add a little something to any outfit.

Final Thoughts

It’s not just about how effortlessly chic these staple pieces make you look, but how much easier deciding what to wear is when you have them in your closet, too.

If you already most of them, congratulations, you’ve got this timeless wardrobe thing all figured out on your own. And if not, I hope you found this short guide to essential pieces everyone should own helpful!
